Wire seal is maybe the very first seal of the history of mankind. Probably three thousand years ago a seal of clay clutching in turn a rope was the first attempt for a sealing operation. Wire seals were used later on, realised in pliable metals such as lead, which has very low cost and perfectly fits different sealing operations. Wire security seals can be categorised into two major lines:
- Wire seals that are used with locking pliers
- Self- locking wire seals
Sealing cables may be either of metal or nylon. In any case their diameter never exceeds 1.5 mm. Wire seal can be used in any situation, but they are particularly suitable for controlling the provision of services such as electricity, gas and water. Wire seals are also very well suited to seal the tank trucks and possibly they could be used also for safety applications in some fire extinguishers. Some of these seals may also be used for decorative purposes: for example lead seals can nicely decorate packages of natural perfumes or oil bottles made in a traditional way. However, it is essential that each wire seal – like any other kind of seal – has its own sequential numbering and personalization of the organization that is using it.
Lately LEGHORN has been able to insert a RFID tag inside the body of some models of wire seals, thus turning them into advanced electronic seals.
