Summary ISO 17712:2013

The current  addition of the International Standard ISO 17712: 2013 was published in May 2013.  Its aim is to test and classify mechanical security seals which are acceptable for securing shipping containers for international commerce.

Seals that are certified  as High Security Seals ISO 17712:2013 can also be used to secure, railway wagons and road freight trailers.

The certification is only granted if the seal can pass a series of tests. Testing includes physical tests, which must be carried out by a certified ISO 17025 testing laboratory who are equipped with the appropriate testing machinery e.g. Tensile test,  Shear test, Bending test and Impact test.

Clause 6.

The second area of testing is handled by the manufacturer’s process review organisation e.g. SGS. This focuses on the design and construction of the security seal and its ability to demonstrate evidence of tampering “Clause 6”. Compliance of this can be presented by a letter and audit report.

Furthermore the manufacturer must comply to a series of security-related practices outlined within the ISO 17712:2013 “Annex A” which must be overseen by their process review organisation (SGS).
