A GUIDE TO USING SECURITY SEALS

INTRODUCTION

Nothing will stop a determined thief with enough time on his hands.

However any business can reduce the risk of theft and pilferage to their goods, by applying a security seal to their consignments.

The efficiency of using seals will depend on well trained trustworthy staff, but also a highly reliable  security seal manufactured by a company who are up to date and focused on tampering prevention evolution.

The continuous cooperation between customer and manufacturer will surely lead to the desired results: Complete protection against tampering attempts.

How should I manage the use of security seals?

All operations concerning the use of seals must be assigned to a qualified and reliable member of staff: registration, application, storage, etc. The designated operator should then carry out the following steps:

  • When dispatching a sealed vehicle or container, the operator must record  their name, the number of the security seal in use, and the identification number of the sealed container or vehicle.
  • Put down the date that the seal is due to be broken when cargo has arrived at final destination and identify the operator who will carry out this operation.
  • After applying the security seal, the operator has to ensure it is closed properly and securely by pulling the seal’s tail thoroughly. Upon arrival of the sealed vehicle/container, the security seal should be checked to see if there has been any damage or incisions made to it,  before it is snapped off. If there are signs of signs of tampering it will probably open easily and the integrity of the cargo will have to be checked.

What are the responsibilities of the security seal manufacturer?

  • Manufacture a seal strong enough to withstand anyaccidental damage
  • Produce the seal in such a way that once opened it cannot be reused
  • Design the seal so that it is intricate enough to prevent counterfeits or duplication
  • Keep a database of all logosand sequential numbering to avoid duplication and to provide this information upon request of the client

Last but not least:

Of course there are different levels of security seals. The above information can be used as a guide to plastic indicative seals. For container shipping, the best way to protect your load is to use a barrier seal. The FORKSEAL®,  locks around the central bars of the container protecting the container doors, offering you complete protection and peace of mind that  your goods are secured.
